The Best Markers

Versatile markers are used by students, writers, and artists alike. They’re excellent for everything from drawing to hand lettering. Keep reading for things to consider when picking out the best markers for you and see our recommendations.

Marker Considerations
Tip Material
The majority of markers have plastic or felt tips.
The majority of markers have plastic or felt tips.
The majority of markers have plastic or felt tips. Plastic tips are typically housed in metal sleeves. They dispense ink evenly, so they’re suitable for writing or detailed work. Felt tips are spongy, fibrous, and usually shaped like a cone. They lose their firmness as they’re used over time, but they’re more versatile. For example, you can use the point of a felt tip to write, or turn it on its side to add shading.
Tip Size
Markers come in various tip sizes.
Markers come in various tip sizes.
Markers come in various tip sizes. Fine tips produce more precise lines, but they can feel scratchier to use. Broad tips feel smoother but aren’t the best for details. Depending on the ink type and tip material, one brand’s definition of a fine tip may not be the same as another brand’s. We recommend looking at the writing samples on the product pages to see how the markers will write.
Ink Formulation
Ink formulations behave differently.
Ink formulations behave differently.
Most of the markers we carry at JetPens are water-based, but we also carry markers with alcohol- and oil-based inks. Oil- and alcohol-based inks are more likely to feather and bleed through paper since they’re meant to be used on other media, such as glossy paper, plastic, metal, or glass. Additionally, some markers feature acid-free ink that won’t fade or discolor paper over time.
Feathering and Bleedthrough
Feathering and bleedthrough can be common issues for markers.
Feathering and bleedthrough can be common issues for markers.
Feathering (when ink absorbs into the paper’s fibers and creates fuzzy lines) is a common issue with markers since they’re wetter than other pens. How much an ink feathers depends on the ink formula and paper used. Low-quality paper is more absorbent and prone to feathering, while high-quality paper keeps your writing or drawing crisp and clean.

Bleedthrough happens when ink soaks through paper to the other side. The paper you use may also determine if you experience bleedthrough. We recommend pairing markers with sketchbooks and fountain pen friendly paper that are designed to withstand inky tools.

Colors
Dye-based inks come in more colors but are not water-resistant like pigment-based inks.
Dye-based inks come in more colors but are not water-resistant like pigment-based inks.
Marker inks are colored with dyes or pigments. Dye-based inks offer a wide array of colors but aren’t water resistant. Pigment-based inks offer more permanence. Some of the colorants may blur under water, but lines will stay legible.
Water/Copic Resistance
Water and Copic resistance is important if you use your markers with other tools.
Water and Copic resistance is important if you use your markers with other tools.
Water and Copic resistance is important if you use your markers with other tools, such as water brushes or alcohol-based Copic markers. A swipe of a wet brush or Copic marker may result in a muddy mess if you’re not careful.

If you’re planning to work with water, make sure that the marker that you’re using is water-resistant or waterproof. “Water-resistant” inks may run or fade when exposed to water but will remain legible. Waterproof inks are completely unaffected by water. Copic-proof pens will resist smearing used with alcohol-based inks. Check out our table below to see how our recommendations performed in our water and Copic resistance tests.

Sakura Pigma Micron Pens are favorites in the art community. They contain smooth-flowing inks that are acid free, permanent, and archival. Sakura Pigma ink is also Copic proof and waterproof, which makes it easy to use with a variety of other art tools.

We should note that Sakura Pigma Micron Pen tips can be fragile. Try not to press too hard when writing or drawing. You may push the tip into the metal sleeve, bend the metal sleeve, or cause ink to spit out.

Learn more about Pigma Micron Pens in our guide.

Faber-Castell PITT Pens are lightfast, waterproof, and Copic proof to ensure that your work lasts. The inks show through paper, but they don’t bleed through. Their tip sizes range from 0.05 mm to 2.5 mm for making both detailed illustrations and bold lines. Pick up a set to try many tip sizes at once.

Faber-Castell standardizes their colors across different writing tools such as watercolor pencils, colored pencils, and brush pens. This makes it easy to mix and match colors for multimedia projects.

Sleek Marvy Le Pens write smoothly and dry quickly with very little feathering and just the slightest showthrough from the back side. While they’re not lightfast, they come in a rainbow of colors that are smudge resistant and can be used for marking distinct sections and keywords in your notes. Plus, they’re slim and lightweight, so you can toss a handful into a pen case without adding too much bulk.

Marvy Marker Pen inks can also be found in Le Plume II Markers for creating expressive headers and taking notes. They feature felt brush tips on one end and Le Pen Marker Pen tips on the other. If the Le Plume II Markers are too long to fit in your pen case, try single-sided Le Pen Flex Brush Pens, which are the same size as Le Pen Marker Pens.

Zebra ClickArt Knock Sign Pens have unique retractable tips that are perfect for jotting down quick notes or swapping colors while you color code. The vibrant inks take about fifteen seconds to dry on smooth paper, but they dry nearly instantaneously on copy paper. Because the 0.6 mm tips are a little bolder than the other markers listed here, we find they’re best for attention-grabbing headers and key information—or notes that you have trouble remembering! If you’re more artistically inclined, the ClickArt’s ink is also waterproof and Copic proof.

Pentel Pulaman Pens offer writers unique double-sided arrow-shaped nibs. The nibs will wear down to the style of the writer over time and even can be used to create line variation depending on how much writing pressure is used.

Pulaman Pens are available with black, blue, or red ink. They have small color indicators on their caps and ends for telling the pens apart at a glance.

Also Consider: Uni EMOTT Sign Pens

Uni EMOTT Sign Pens are a great choice for heavy-handed writing. Their tips are reinforced with protective shields. No matter the angle or pressure, the pens create consistent lines. The inks are also water and Copic resistant—they’ll run a bit, but writing stays legible in case of any spills. Choose individual pens or sets with five, ten, or all forty colors.

Journalers can enjoy a wide variety of colors with Staedtler Triplus Fineliners. These markers are some of our favorites for both writing down thoughts and adding decorations in a journal. Those who like to bullet journal and plan with multiple colors will also enjoy the Triplus Fineliner because its precise lines are ideal for squeezing information into calendar boxes. Though the barrels are slim, they have triangular shapes that are comfortable to grip even during long writing sessions.

The ink is formulated with Staedtler’s “dry safe” technology, so it can be left uncapped for a few days without drying out. However, we don’t recommend leaving the fineliners uncapped indefinitely.

Kuretake ZIG Clean Color Dot Markers have squishy dot tips that can make marks from 1 mm to 5 mm depending on how much pressure is used. One marker can be used to letter expressive titles, create pointillism-inspired artworks, and fill in habit trackers! Choose from single-sided markers that only come with the dot tips and double-sided markers that have both dot tips and 0.5 mm plastic nibs.

Stabilo Point 88 Fineliners have thin plastic tips that give you clear views of where you’re coloring and pair perfectly with adult coloring books. Our favorite feature is the incredible range of colors—with so many to choose from, you can pick out exactly the shade you’re looking for. And, the inks won’t bleed unless you color over the same section a few times.

If you need markers with broader tips to fill in large areas, try the Paper Mate Flair Felt Tip Pens instead. They’re available with ultra-fine, medium, and broad felt tips and feature acid-free inks that resist smearing and bleedthrough. Their more limited color selection still includes uncommon hues, some of which are scented!

Pilot ILMILY Color Two Color Markers use inks that change color when introduced to heat caused by friction when rubbed at with rubber ends. Though their base colors are a little too dark to use for highlighting, they’d be great for headers for notes or bullet journal spreads.

You can find the same color-changing inks in ILMILY Color Gel Pens that are handy for to-do lists, notes, and more.

Double-sided Sun-Star Decot Overwriting Markers feature chisel tips with dark inks and fine tips with bright inks. The bright inks are specially formulated to write over the dark inks without the colors becoming muddled. Combine different Decot Overwriting Markers to make headers or doodles that pop.

If you can’t seem to color within the lines or dislike the look of crossed-out spelling mistakes, you’ll appreciate erasable Pilot FriXion Markers. Pilot FriXion ink is heat-sensitive and “erases” with friction. Simply rub at stray marks with the rubber eraser on the cap and watch the ink disappear! Be aware that the ink goes clear if left anywhere hot, so don’t leave your coloring book in a car that’s parked in the sun.

This incredible ink formula can also be found in FriXion Fineliners. They’re especially useful for writing on fabric, as their lines will disappear when the fabric is ironed or laundered at or over 140°F/60°C.

The Best Label Markers: Pilot Oil-Based Twin Markers

Double-sided Pilot Oil-Based Twin Markers feature alcohol- and oil-based inks for labeling plastic, metal, and other surfaces. They’re especially beloved by the crafting community for their ability to write on washi tape and transparent sticky notes, which typically have filmy surfaces that are suitable for pencils and ballpoint pens.

In our tests, we found that the markers wrote well on difficult materials like parchment paper, wax paper, and even nonstick pans. The ink doesn’t rub off with condensation but can be easily washed off.

Ultra Fine Sharpie Markers feature thin plastic nibs and free-flowing inks that create thick, bold lines. Though they’ll bleed through regular paper, they fare well on adhesive labels and nonporous surfaces like metal and glass. Since their inks are water resistant, you can rest assured that your letters will remain legible even if they come in contact with water.

Pentel Sign Pens may look simple with their simple plastic bodies and snap caps, but they’re actually the “Original Fiber-Tipped Pens.” Invented in 1963, they were designed to create bold lines with a convenient form factor similar to a ballpoint pen. Their firm tips are smooth and easy to control, so they're better for creating consistent letter shapes and outlines rather than expressive line variation. This also makes them ideal for beginners who are trying lettering for the first time.

For more dramatic line variation that’s associated with modern brush lettering, try the Pentel Fude Touch Brush Sign Pens. They come in more colors than the original Sign Pen and feature durable brush tips.

Also Consider: Tombow Dual Brush Pens

Tombow Dual Brush Pens are incredibly popular in the calligraphy community, and for good reason. Their double-sided designs feature flexible tips that allow for expressive brushstrokes and sturdy bullet tips for adding details, outlining, or doodling. Because their inks are water soluble, a blending kit can be used to create washes of color or to combine inks.

Tombow Dual Brush Pens come in a huge color selection and are available in sets or as single pens if you want to curate a collection of your favorite colors.

Multi-surface Uni Posca Paint Markers dispense waterproof, opaque inks that show up on both light and dark surfaces. They work well on porous surfaces, such as paper and wood, as well as non-porous surfaces like glass, plastic, and metal. When dry, the inks can be scraped off of non-porous surfaces, but will permanently adhere to porous ones. The 0.7 mm and 2.5 mm sizes come in the widest color ranges for eye-catching signage.

Sharpie Oil-Based Paint Markers can write on almost any non-porous surface including glass, plastic, metal, wood, and stone. Like the Uni Posca, its ink is opaque when applied. It’s also water, fade, and abrasion resistant and quick drying, making it perfect for outdoor craft projects. They’re best on glossy or coated paper, as they may bleed through regular, non-coated paper.
