As their name suggests, lead guard pencils are mechanical pencils with features meant to reinforce and cushion delicate leads. Lead guard mechanical pencils greatly reduce lead breakage so you don’t waste lead or interrupt your focus. Keep reading to learn about different types of lead guards and our favorite lead guard pencils.
The Zebra DelGuard comes in various body styles, ranging from the standard plastic version to the ergonomic Type-GR. Read our comprehensive guide to learn more.
Lead guarding mechanisms are only found on mechanical pencils. Wooden pencils don’t have lead guarding features.
We’ve listed the four main types of lead guard sleeves below. Bear in mind that extending too much lead can prevent the lead guard from working correctly.
Since the lead sleeve has to touch the writing surface to retract, many pencils with this feature have rounded tips to prevent the guide pipe from scratching the paper. However, you may still feel some feedback (the tactile sensation of the writing instrument making contact with the paper).
Because sliding lead sleeves can fully retract into the pencil, they’re less likely to poke holes in pen cases or pockets. To ensure the guide pipe is protected, hold the top push button and press the lead sleeve into the nose cone. After releasing the push button, the lead sleeve will remain inside the pencil until the next time you extend the lead.
We should note that there’s a difference between sliding lead sleeves and retractable lead sleeves that perform other functions. While both are able to go into the pencil body to protect them from becoming damaged, only sliding lead sleeves recede as lead is used up.
The Kuru Toga Advance is available in three tip sizes. The extra fine 0.3 mm is best for smaller handwriting styles while the 0.5 mm and 0.7 mm sizes can be used for everyday writing.
Other Uni Kuru Toga pencils that feature the W Speed Engine and sliding lead sleeve are the Pipe Slide and Advance Upgrade. The Pipe Slide is lightweight with an all plastic body, while the Advance Upgrade has a textured metal grip section that helps maintain your grasp.
Similar to how a car’s suspension absorbs the bumps in the road when driving, the Pilot Mogulair uses an “active suspension” mechanism with a spring cushion to reduce the initial impact of putting the pencil tip to paper. The mechanism also allows the lead to retract into the tip when there’s too much writing pressure. You can shake the pencil to advance the lead (a handy feature when you’re concentrating on your writing), or press on the top button.
If you often find yourself in the middle of long writing sessions, consider the Orenz Nero and Orenz AT. Along with sliding lead sleeves, these pencils will automatically advance the lead. After extending the lead once, you can keep writing until it’s used up!
Writers who want a pencil that’s as stylish as it is functional will love the Pilot Fure Fure Me. This cute mechanical pencil has a sliding lead sleeve and shaker mechanism that can dispense lead by shaking the pencil up and down without adjusting your grip. It is available with 0.3 mm lead for small handwriting and sheet styles.
If you want more color options, try the Uni EMOTT Color Mechanical Pencil. It also features a sliding lead sleeve and comes in unique hues such as Khaki Green and Fuchsia.
The standard Kokuyo Enpitsu Sharp Pencil has a hexagonal body similar to that of a wooden pencil, which makes it a great fit for artists more used to traditional sketching tools. The Enpitsu Sharp has a sliding lead sleeve and is easy to refill: just drop the lead into the hole at the top of the pencil. The Enpitsu’s inner mechanism will keep the lead from falling out, even if it’s flipped upside down. Be sure to pick a separate eraser for corrections or lightening graphite sketches.
The mechanical pencil has a sliding lead sleeve so it’s safe to store in your EDC bag of choice. It even comes with a clean-out rod under its refillable eraser, so you can handle lead jams with ease.
With its comfortable rubber grip section, the Uni-ball 207 Mechanical Pencil is a great no-nonsense writing instrument. Its body design is similar to Uni Signo 207 and 307 pens and easily slips into a pen case. On the off chance you need to keep the pencil in a pocket, the sliding lead sleeve retracts so it won’t poke holes in fabric or create accidental marks. We also appreciate the twist-up eraser shaped like a hexagon for precise corrections.
The Staedtler 771 Mechanical Pencil is another great ergonomic option. Its 1.3 mm lead is less prone to breakage and is protected by a sliding lead sleeve. The pencil’s wide, triangular body and gently molded grip section encourages a relaxed grip style, so if you have a “death grip” this may be the pencil for you!
The Precision comes packaged with lead and eraser refills. Choose between retractable tips with sliding lead sleeves and fixed tips that keep the lead sleeves in place. Both versions have grip sections that are softly knurled so your fingers can maintain their grasp.
The OHTO MS01 Mechanical Pencil has a heavier brass grip section and a lighter aluminum barrel. This shifts the center of gravity towards the tip for better control. It also has adjustable features to customize the pencil to your needs. Twist the grip section to change the length of the lead sleeve and twist the component above the grip section to change the amount of lead that is dispensed.
